Permit FAQs
How long does a skip permit take to arrange?
Southampton City Council and Hampshire authority permits require 7 working days notice. PO1–PO6 area permits require 4 working days notice. We handle the application on your behalf — just let us know when you book.
Can I arrange my own skip permit?
Yes, you can apply directly to Southampton City Council for a skip permit. However, we handle the permit application as part of our service at no extra charge for the admin — you only pay the council fee. Most customers prefer to let us manage it.
What happens if I don't get a permit for a skip on the road?
Placing a skip on a public road without a permit is illegal. Southampton City Council can issue a fixed penalty notice and require immediate removal of the skip at your cost. Always obtain a permit before placing a skip on any public highway or pavement.
Do skip permits cover parking bay suspensions?
No — parking bay suspensions are a separate application. If you need to suspend a parking bay to accommodate your skip, this costs from £53.00 + VAT and requires 7 working days notice. We can arrange this for you alongside the skip permit.
How long is a skip permit valid for?
Skip permits are typically valid for a set hire period, usually up to 28 days depending on the council. If you need the skip for longer, the permit will need to be extended. Let us know if your project is running long and we'll arrange an extension.
What are the permit conditions for a skip on the road?
Permit conditions typically require the skip to have reflective markings on all four corners and a warning light at night. The skip must not obstruct traffic flow, must leave adequate clearance for pedestrians, and must be removed promptly at the end of the permit period. We ensure all skips placed on public roads comply with these requirements.
